Game of Thrones in Kastela
The town of Kaštela lies on the coast of Kaštela Bay and with a population of more than 40 000, it is the second largest town in the Split-Dalmatia County. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it developed around fortifications – citadels (kaštela), in seven villages (Kaštel Sućurac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Novi and Kaštel Štafilić), each of them with its own specific traits so typical of this Mediterranean area.
An interesting village is Kaštel Gomilica that developed around the historic fortification Kaštilac, which from the 16th century stands nearly intact on a small island, surrounded by sea and connected with the mainland by a stone bridge. The entrance to the citadel is protected by a high tower entered across a drawbridge.
This unique, romantic and mysterious fortification in Kaštel Gomilica was chosen as the setting for the fourth season of the popular television series Game of Thrones, based on the third book from the series A Song of Ice and Fire by American author George R. R. Martin.
