Hvar Island is tourist destination that attracts tourists with beauty of nature, the scent of sage, lavender, rosemary, olives, wine, rich cultural and
historic heritage. It is longest and the sunniest Croatian island with 2718 hours of sunshine per year. The island of Hvar is situated in the middle of the
Dalmatian region and it is the island of clear sea and sandy beaches. It is located 14 kilometres southeast of the island of Solta, 3.4km south of the
island of Brac and 7.2 km north of the island of Peljesac. Hvar island holds such location that it’s on every sea ship line of eastern Adriatic.
In the centre of Hvar there is highest peak – Nikola (628m) and on the north there is fertile Velo field. North coast with its large bay is more indented then south coast. The economy is based on tourism, fishing and agriculture. Three fishing towns on the island are Sucuraj, Vrbovska and Hvar.

The town of Hvar is the central and most important city on the island where celebration took place for 140 years of organized tourism. With its seven centuries old walls and forts Hvar town is a place of the oldest folk theatre in Europe from 1612. In the town there are numerous galleries, museums, exhibitions, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Franciscan monastery with a bell tower and the main square.
For admirers of active vacation, island offers numerous sport activities. Cycling is popular because of many historic locations that are worth visiting, various cycling tracks and beautiful sights. Between popular sports are: tennis, volleyball, handball, soccer and beach volleyball. On an island there are many tennis-courts, mini golf courses, and tables for table-tennis. Famous swimming marathon “Pharos” takes place every year in town of Jelsa.
