Sibenik is one of the oldest and most beautiful Croatian cities. It is located in a protected natural harbour, in the central part of the Adriatic coast at
the mouth of the river Krka. This area is full of beauty bays, islands, islets, reefs, beaches and interesting virgin surroundings. Two national parks
Kornati and Krka represent outstanding natural beauty. Sibenik is the only major coastal city not founded by the Romans, but Croats. The town was first
mentioned in 1066 in the deed of King Peter Kresimir IV.
The old town provides a special atmosphere to the city, together with the stone houses and narrow streets that lead down to the main harbour. The main access to the historic centre is provided from Poljana. On the left side of the entrance there are remains of the city walls with gothic sculpture of St. Michael, the patron of the city, and on the right side of the entrance is a neo-Renaissance theatre building that was opened to the public in 1870.
Most beautiful Croatian urban heritage – Croatian Republic Square is located in the historic town square. For centuries it was the centre of the medieval Sibenik. Its formation and arrangement were completed in the 15th century. First coffee house was opened in 1750. In the old town there is an interesting square with four wells which were built in 1451. The central square is surrounded by St. James church, City Hall, Little loggia, the Rector and the Bishop’s Palace and assembly of stone patrician palaces.
With a large number of religious monuments, of exceptional artistic and historical value is the Cathedral of St. James, one of the most important Renaissance monuments in Croatia, whose construction began in the 1431 and belonged to the world heritage. It is the only building in Europe built entirely of stone with construction time more than 100 years. George the Dalmatian, the famous master raised the baptistery, sacristy, Peter and Paul, angels and number of 34 lion and 74 human heads. In 2001, it was included in the World Heritage by UNESCO.
